The protective factors of marital stability in long-term marriage globally: a systematic review

Abstract
Purpose:
In recent decades, due to high prevalence of divorce in different countries and considering detrimental aftermath, it is important to study marriage stability components. The current study explored fundamental protective factors of long-term marriage through the systematic review.
Method:
Searches for relevant publications were conducted in Embase, web of science, PubMed, Scopus, science direct, magiran and SID from their inceptions through January 30, 2019. Based on the keywords search 1706 articles were found, then these studies was screened based on eligibility criteria, eventually 25 articles remained.
Results:
the extracted protective factors associated with marital stability in long-term marriage classified into interpersonal and intrapersonal categories. Outstanding extracted factors consist of spirituality and religion, commitment, sexual relationship, communication, children, love and attachment, intimacy, conflict resolution approach. Findings show that some aspects of relationship such as commitment act as preservation marital pillars in critical situations and some aspects such as intimacy help to construct marital identity and satisfaction.
Conclusions:
The discovered marital stability components are structures that enhance the couple identity and a sense of togetherness. Identifying the particular aspects of marital relationship that contribute to marital stability may help specialists and researchers to target the special marital interaction types that may enhance relationship happiness and longevity furthermore prevent dispensable divorces.
